Consider this:
Bugs can seem creepy and gross but they are super important to humans. They help plants grow by transferring pollen from flower t flower. Bugs clean up the environment by eating things and turning them into nutrient rich soil. Bugs are also a food source for amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Maybe you’re ready to be an entomologist, a person that studies bugs, or maybe you need to warm up to the idea – here are some bugs you can easily handle.
- Craft sticks
- Pipe cleaners
- Glue
- Scissors
- Googly eyes
- Craft foam or paper
Real bug or imaginary
Entomologists put insects into four Orders:
- Coleoptera (beetles)
- Diptera (flies)
- Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps)
- Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies)
- Cut pipe cleaners to needed lengths
- Cut foam or paper carefully with scissors
- Use a drop of glue to hold the pipe cleaner to the craft stick
- Glue eyes, paper or foam pieces or whatever your bug needs
Attach googly eyes or other embellishments
- Most caterpillars have 12 eyes
- Fruit Flies were the first living being sent into space
- A bee’s wings beat 190 times a second
- Mosquitos are attracted to smelly feet
- Butterflies taste with their feet
- Lobsters and viruses are known as bugs, but they are not true bugs
- There are about 80,000 known species of bugs, but they are still naming species of bugs in Australia!
